Our Teacher - Ms. Herring
Fun with Wind Tubes! |
Ms. Herring teaches second grade and runs the Imagination Club with her students. The Imagination Club takes place on Friday afternoons, and Ms. Herring provides fun and engaging activities for her students to engage in creative play.
"I have found that the kids are more engaged and more excited about learning when I give them extended time to explore with new materials and collaborate with their peers. When they feel safe enough to try new things and make mistakes, they are willing to take more risks. I think our Imagination Club is not only a time for creative play and thought, but also a time for the students to step out of their comfort zone and support one another when things feel new or challenging." - Ms. Herring |
The Imagination Club had a chance to experiment with different materials to see how they would fly inside a wind tube. Students in Ms. Herring's class read The Lorax and were tasked with finding a way to reseed the forest! Give those Imagination Club students a task, and their imaginations soar! Check out their creations as they grappled with success and failure! :-)
A LOT of Fun with LittleBits!
Our Imagination Club students were so excited to get to work with LittleBits today! The buzz of creativity could be heard throughout the room as students worked with various buzzers, circuits, switches and made "cool" things work!
Exploring With Cardboard
The Imagination Club began with an exploration in cardboard. Students made a plan for what they were going to create, illustrated and labeled their creations, and got to work! Students worked with a partner kindergarten class in groups and in teams of two.
Lego Challenge
In another Imagination Club session, students brainstormed, planned, and sketched what they could make during the Lego Challenge. They had to decide what they would create if they had as many Legos as they wanted, any color Lego imaginable, and all the time they needed.
Then, students had to adapt, because they were provided limited tools and time (on purpose)! Ms. Herring gave each student three cups of Legos. They had to either try their original plan with the new amount of Legos and time or they had to decide to try to build something that would work better with their allowed materials.
Club time ended with a museum walk to take a look at the finished projects!

Paper Airplanes
Students got to pick which airplane design they wanted to build and test out. Once their planes were created, Ms. Herring and Mr. Janssen took the students to the field to test out their aerodynamics. Students had a blast seeing whose airplane went farthest! Some airplanes had wings, some had different shapes, some were highly decorated - all of the students had a great time with creative play.
